HAAST - The Last Frontier

Nowhere else offers this mix: ancient rainforest, powerful rivers, rugged coastline, and snow-capped mountains all within striking distance.

Haast sits deep in the far southwest of New Zealand’s South Island — a true last frontier where the ocean meets the Alps and everything wild collides in one place. It lies within Te Wāhipounamu, the South West New Zealand UNESCO World Heritage Area, one of the most untouched wilderness regions left on the planet.
Long before roads and tour buses, Māori travelled this route — known as Tioripatea — to trade pounamu (greenstone) through the interior. In 1863, German explorer Julius von Haast identified the pass that now bears his name, opening the region to pioneers, gold miners, and aviation history — but never taming it. Unlike Queenstown or Wānaka, Haast stayed raw. No crowds. No gloss. No shortcuts. This is why it’s the ultimate base for real outdoor adventure — hunt in the mountains, fish the rivers, quad the beaches, dive the coast, hike the bush — all in one place, all guided by locals who live it. If you want the real West Coast, not the watered-down version, this is where you come Into the West.
Your Wilderness Wingman

Still reading? Alright, you’re probably into this kinda stuff.
So, let’s introduce you to the man who is offering you wild, untamed adventures in the South West of New Zealand’s South Island.
Meet Joe, aka J.T.
I grew up with a deep passion for hunting and the wilderness — reading Rod & Rifle in the 80s, tying flies, and dreaming of the wild places New Zealand had to offer.
As soon as my father trusted me with his old WWII .303, I was hooked — and the rest is history.
I learned to hunt the hard way, back when deer were scarce from WARO operations, stalking animals deep in the bush. It taught me patience and a real understanding of my quarry.
Fast forward a few years, and I’m now a father to twins, Courtney and Caleb. Caleb took to the outdoors from day one. For over 20 years, as father and son, we’ve hunted, fished, and explored the southern wilderness together — living a life many kids today will never get the chance to experience.
That loss of connection for our children to the outdoors concerns me. We live in a unique, special place, and I want to share my knowledge and this enriching way of life with those who still value it.
So come and join me for a truly unique experience in the wild beauty of South Westland.

Our Mission
Our mission is simple: leave the land better than we found it, and protect a way of life that’s quietly fading away.
We’re here to get the next generation off screens and back into nature. To create space for men to reset, reconnect, and remember what matters. To pass on real outdoor skills before they’re lost for good.
We want people to experience this part of New Zealand the way it was meant to be experienced. To learn the local history, respect the land, and step away from the daily grind that wears everyone down. To slow things down, breathe, and reconnect — with nature, with each other, and with themselves.
Bring your mates. Bring your family. Bring the next generation.
Leave with skills, stories, and a deeper respect for the land — and help keep a way of life worth passing on.

Real Adventure
Out here, hunting isn’t staged or tamed. No fenced stags, no easy wins — just fair chaise hunting, real tracks, and real challenges. It’s about getting out there, testing yourself, and learning the land, not just ticking off a trophy.
Whether a fish takes your line or you go home empty-handed, the skills, stories, and memories stick with you. This is proper outdoor adventure for those who want to do it all for the right reasons — respect, experience, and the thrill of the wild.
